eCOURSE DESIGN

Designing Your eCourse Blueprint

The first step in creating an eCourse or modifying your f2f course to an eCourse (web-enhanced, blended/flipped, or online) is creating a blueprint for the eCourse. The steps expressed below follow the pattern of the “Backward Design” instructional design model, and thus each step must be followed in a sequential order.

The Design stage of the course creation/modification process requires you to establish/refine the following:

Establish and document your eCourse’s goals and objectives which enables relevant stakeholders to understand what students pursuing or who have pursued the course are expected to learn and do upon completing the course in question.

Information about your eCourse’s module learning objectives can exist in the course outline, but it must also be included in the “module’s course description page” on the learning management system (LMS), Canvas.

Establish and document brief information about the course.  The overall goals are expected to be within your course description. This will be included in the course outline and must also be present on the “course home page” on Canvas.

It is important to indicate to students and other interested stakeholders what learners are expected to be able to do when they engage in any given module for your eCourse. Therefore, establish and document the learning objectives for each of your eCourse’s modules.

This information may not traditionally be present in one’s course outline, but it is required on the “module’s course description page” on the learning management system (LMS), Canvas. See illustration.

If you need guidance on creating or modifying the objectives for your course modules, please see the following resource. More Info

Create a brief introduction as to what a module would cover, thereby providing students with an expectation of what will be covered. While this information may not be traditionally present in one’s course outline, it is required on the “module’s course description page” on the learning management system (LMS), Canvas.

Based upon what the intended objectives are for each module, as an instructor, begin to identify the appropriate assessments whether formative or summative that you will include in your eCourse that will determine whether students have met the outcomes of the module and the course as a whole

Review this list for a variety of activities that you can consider including in your eCourse.

This step requires you to reflect about and document the types of activities that you can employ in your course to aid students in their learning experience. These activities need to be listed on the “module’s course description page” on the learning management system (LMS), Canvas.

Identify the learning materials (required and optional where relevant) that are to be utilized in the various modules within the eCourse and which are aligned to the learning objectives. It is highly recommended to have at least two different formats (written, video, audio, or interactive multimedia) of the learning materials.

Identify the main (or suite of) instructional strategies that will be employed in the eCourse e.g. (Active Learning, Collaborative, Seminar Style, Scenario Based/Simulations/Gamifications) that supports the achievement of the learning objectives.

Identify the mode of delivery for your eCourse, whether it is to be web-enhanced, blended/flipped, online-hybrid, or online. Faculty are required to inform TLIS when they intend to utilize ZOOM or Mediasite to support their delivery mode.
