006 – How do I copy content from another Moodle course?

Moodle allows lecturers to copy course content from a course in which they already have editing access. This is useful when preparing a new semester course shell from a master course, sandbox or previous course.

Use the Import function to copy content into the destination course.

Before you begin #

Confirm that:

  • You are enrolled as a lecturer or editing teacher in both courses.
  • You have opened the course that will receive the copied content.
  • You have identified the correct source course.
  • The destination course does not already contain duplicate copies of the same content.

The destination course is the course into which the content will be copied.

The source course is the course containing the material you want to reuse.

Import content into your course #

  1. Open the destination course.
  2. Select More from the course navigation.
  3. Select Course reuse.
  4. From the dropdown menu, select Import.
  5. Search for the source course by entering its course code or name.
  6. Select the correct source course.
  7. Select Continue.
  8. Review the initial settings and select Next.
  9. Select the course sections, activities and resources you want to copy.
  10. Deselect any content that you do not need.
  11. Select Next.
  12. Review your selections carefully.
  13. Select Perform import.
  14. When the import is complete, select Continue to return to the destination course.

The wording or location of some options may vary slightly depending on your Moodle permissions and the course format.

What can be copied? #

You may be able to import:

  • Course sections
  • Pages and text areas
  • Files and folders
  • URLs
  • Assignments
  • Forums
  • Quizzes
  • Question-bank content
  • Labels
  • Books
  • Gradebook categories and items
  • Restriction and completion settings

Only select the content required for the new course.

What is not normally copied? #

Student-specific information is not normally included in a course import. This includes:

  • Student enrolments
  • Assignment submissions
  • Quiz attempts
  • Grades
  • Forum posts
  • Completion records
  • Individual student activity data

The import process is intended to reuse course structure and teaching content, not student records.

Important checks after importing #

After the import is complete, review the destination course and update:

  • Course dates
  • Assignment due dates
  • Quiz opening and closing dates
  • Forum dates
  • Restriction settings
  • Activity-completion conditions
  • Lecturer names and contact information
  • Course-outline documents
  • Semester-specific announcements
  • Links to external resources
  • Gradebook setup
  • Section headings
  • Images and embedded media

Also confirm that files, images, videos and links open correctly.

Avoid importing the same content more than once #

Repeating an import may create duplicate:

  • Sections
  • Activities
  • Files
  • Gradebook items
  • Question-bank categories

Before importing, check whether the content is already present in the destination course.

Copying a complete course #

Where most or all content is required, you may select Jump to final step after choosing the source course.

Use this option carefully, as it may import all available content and settings from the source course.

For better control, select Next and choose the required content manually.

Unable to find the source course? #

A course may not appear in the import search if:

  • You do not have editing access to it.
  • You are searching in the wrong Moodle environment.
  • The course code or name was entered incorrectly.
  • The course is in a category that you cannot access.
  • Your lecturer assignment has not yet been processed.

Submit a request to Support TLIS and include:

  • Your full name
  • UTT staff ID
  • Source course code and name
  • Destination course code and name
  • Semester and academic year
  • Moodle environment being used
  • Screenshot of the course search results or error message
